Keeping readers hooked until the final word isn’t magic — it’s a craft. The secret lies in how you build your characters, construct your plot, and inject suspense. But don’t worry, this article won’t overload you with jargon. Instead, let’s dive into a clear, practical breakdown of how to structure your story so readers stick with you to the very end.

1. Hook Them in the First 100 Words

If the beginning of your story doesn’t pull readers in, they’ll never make it to the middle. The first 100 words should act like a magnet, grabbing attention immediately. Skip the pleasantries — get to the action, conflict, or an irresistible question. Avoid long-winded descriptions or backstory dumps. Dive right into the meat of your narrative.

Example: Instead of: “It was a sunny afternoon in May when Alice decided to go for a walk…”

Try: “Alice knew the body was hidden under the rosebushes, but she wasn’t sure how long the smell would stay buried.”

Notice the difference? The second version raises immediate questions and pulls readers in. This is your first and most…
