Unexpected Signs of Colorectal Cancer: Paying Attention to Thin Stools
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common diseases in France, affecting more than 47,000 people each year. The diversity of symptoms can make its diagnosis challenging, but certain signs should immediately raise concern. Among them, a particularly unexpected and worrying symptom: the appearance of thin stools.
An Unexpected Warning Sign
According to Dr. Michael Cecchini, co-director of the colorectal program at the Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers and medical oncologist at Yale Cancer Center, a change in stool shape, becoming very thin or pencil-thin, can indicate the presence of colorectal cancer. This change typically occurs when tumors develop at the end of the colon or are numerous along the colon walls, causing a narrowing of the stool passage. Dr. Jeffrey Dueker, a gastroenterologist at the University of Pittsburgh, emphasizes that this symptom becomes particularly concerning when it persists. He notes that while it is not the most common symptom, it should not be ignored.
